Sue Ficarra has been a professional in the transportation field for in excess of 34 years. In 1974 she began her career as a bus driver for Ridge Road Express in Niagara County, and remained with that company for seven years while learning the details of school bus operation, and safety vehicle standards and their application to the mass movement of people.
In 1989 Ms. Ficarra was employed by Laidlaw Transit, in an office where contracts covering 21 districts in a tri-county area were overseen. In that environment she was taught, and honed the skills of both manual and electronic routing. In addition, Ms. Ficarra assisted in the performance of transportation financial functions for Laidlaw, and maintained the company’s transportation records.
A major part of her work for Laidlaw was that of the daily dispatching of various vehicles required for both regular and charter runs. As a result of the nature and scope of her work, Ms. Ficarra’s services were sought by Laidlaw’s management for assistance in the pricing of bids, review of bid specifications and attendance at bid meetings.
Sue Ficarra joined the VMC staff in April 2000, and has been made responsible for the routing of five countywide projects (and assisting in two others), for the supervision of the maintenance of all of VMC’s transportation data, and for the reconciliation of vendor invoices with a view to contract restrictions and operational necessities. In addition, she oversees the day to day customer relations aspects of those countywide projects.
